Children of the slums

Children of the slums

My sister used to go to an NGO that planned many activities for children and women living in slums. My curiosity to experience one day in NGO made me ask her whether can I join her someday. The day I decided to go was specially planned for children. My sister went to pick up a few kids from their houses. So while we were walking in the streets of the slums, a few children just smiled at us. Few women were sitting in the middle of the narrow passage and were spreading dried cashews on a piece of cloth kept in the middle of the route.

Then kids assembled in a small area of slums. We spread plastic sheets for their seating arrangement. Each of them brought their books and pen or pencils. A few kids who didn't have books had to borrow from their friends. We took their prayer initially and then their studies. We also played games and did a few exercises with them. They all were curious to learn new things. Each one of them kept coming again and again to us for asking doubts related to the subjects. One girl told us that her mother had advised her to learn English as soon as possible. So she wanted to learn English thoroughly. We ended that day with the national anthem.

One of them took us to show her family crop plantations situated a little away from the slum area. That girl seemed happier while showing us their crops. Though it was my first time, they all showed so much love towards me. Each one of them did a handshake in the end and smiled at us. My sister told me about other activities conducted by the NGO. Some activities like celebrating women's day, festivals, and gifting sewing machines for the women living in slums. They have also shown movies such as I am Kalam with the help of a projector to the kids.

All these initiatives by the NGO need to be appreciated by us. The whole experience of visiting that place was heart-touching. There is a big difference between seeing or reading about their lives and personally visiting that place.

We felt grateful for living the way we want after meeting them. The feeling of sharing knowledge and giving gifts to them is the true definition of happiness. Donating anything to these kids can make their lives better. Sharing our knowledge will surely help them face the upcoming difficulties of life. It will help them to build a bright future. That NGO's name is Ayushman Foundation.
